  1. Urbanisation

  2. WHAT IS URBANISATION? • Urbanization is also defined by the United Nations as movement of people from rural to urban areas with population growth equating to urban migration.

  3. WHAT ARE MEGACITIES? • A megacity is usually defined as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of 10 million people

  4. Definitions • A slum is a district of a city or town which is usually inhabited by the very poor or socially disadvantaged. Slums can be found in most large cities around the world • Shanty towns, "marginal" or informal settlements are units of irregular, low-cost dwellings, usually on lands belonging to third parties, and most often located in the periphery of the cities. These dwellings are often assembled in a patchwork fashion from pieces of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and any other material that will provide cover. Residences are almost always built without a license. Shanty towns are mostly found in developing nations, or partially developed • favela is the Brazilian equivalent of a shanty town, which are generally found on the edge of the city. They have electricity, but often not formally. Favelas are constructed from a variety of materials, ranging from bricks to garbage. Many favelas are very close and very cramped. They are plagued by sewage, crime and hygiene problems
