  2. Please pick up a textbook on your way in. • Look on pages 242- in the textbook to answer the following questions. • 1. List the four social classes in Muslim Society. Tell me who is in each group. • 2. Explain the role of women in Muslim society. • 3. What is the House of Wisdom? • 4. What are two advances in astronomy made during this time? Why was astronomy a priority for the Muslims?

  3. Muslim Influence • After the death of Muhammad, many African states were conquered or converted to Islam. • North African governments were based on Islamic law (relied heavily on religious scholars as govt advisors).

  4. Islamic Law • Since Muslims do not separate their personal life from religious life, Islamic law regulates almost all areas of life. • It provided a state with order, and a set of values that helped shape a common identity. • Islamic law will also unify the entire Islamic world (despite cultural and ethnic differences).

Mansa Musa • Mali’s next great ruler • A skilled military leader, took royal control over the gold-salt trade. • Large army kept order and expanded Mali to twice the size of Ghana. • Mansa-Musa divided the empire into provinces and appointed governors to rule areas more efficiently= bureaucracy • After returning from hajj, Mansa-Musa built new mosques and universities;Tumbuktu will become one of the most important cities in the empire, attracting Muslim scholars and doctors.

Songhai 1400’s-1591 • Will extend empire, gain control of important trade routes and move capital to Gao • Sunni Ali- one of Songhai’s important rulers, built an army that included a fleet of canoes and a force on horseback. Songhai • After the death of Sunni Ali, his son took over- shortly after obtaining power, a devout Muslim, Askia Muhammad, overthrew and replaced him • Askia Muhammad ruled for 35 years, and created an organized government with an efficient tax system and appointed officials to oversee the treasury, army, navy, and agriculture • Because of their lack of modern weapons, the Songhai will be overthrown by a Moroccan army; this will end the 1000 year period of rule by powerful kingdoms in West Africa
