World Health Assembly May 26 2012 • Adopt a global target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases by 2025 “25 BY 25” • Strong support for targets in four main risk factors, tobacco use harmful use of alcohol unhealthy diet (salt) physical inactivity • Support for development of targets • obesity, fat intake, alcohol, cholesterol and health system responses such as availability of essential medicines for noncommunicable diseases

  4. World Health Assembly • Initiative of Jamaica and Samoa • Leadership of the United States, Barbados, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Norway, Russian Federation, Thailand and Switzerland

Breakout Groups: Four pillars • Group 1: Enhancing communication • Owen Bernard and Tim Roach • Group 2: Capacity building • Darshanand Rampersaud and David Hippolyte • Group 3: Advocacy • Deborah Chen and Victor Coombs • Group 4: MHealth • Chris Hassell and Shivonne Johnson Random assignment to groups

Instructions for Working Group • Introduce selves (name, organization, country) • Select a rapporteur and a presenter • Chairs provide general information and stimulate discussion: sharing experiences, providing approaches • Consider • Key regional needs • 3-5 Suggestions for the way forward together • Region as a whole • Countries special competencies and needs • Contribution of sectors • BE READY TO REPORT AT 4 PM WITH PPT

Assumptions and Considerations • We accept the broad objectives of the Port of Spain Declaration, UNHLM, WHA and NCD Alliance • Surveillance is very important and the responsibility of governments • There is already many excellent initiatives at the regional, national and local levels • Money—important but not only need • Role of non-health civil society
