  2. Pre-Imperialism Africa • Sub-Saharan Africa • No united countries, instead 1000s of independent tribes • Europeans unable to reach the interior, therefore only control approx. 10% of land (primarily along the coast)

  3. Effect of the Industrial Revolution • Need more natural resources and new markets • Look to Africa and Asia • New technology such as the steamboat make travel in Africa easier

  4. What is Imperialism? • The takeover of a country or territory by a stronger nation with the intent of dominating the political, economic, and social life of the people of that nation

  5. Driving Forces of Imperialism • Nationalism • “All great nations in the fullness of their strength have desired to set their mark upon barbarian lands, and those who fail to participate in this great rivalry will play a pitiable role in the time to come”. • Competition to see which country can control more territory • Amount of territory controlled determined your country’s rank

  6. Driving Forces of Imperialism • Racism • We are better than you • Europeans viewed themselves as better than any other civilizations • Social-Darwinism • “Survival of the fittest” • Strongest become successful and wealthy • Europeans had advanced technology

  7. Berlin Conference (1884-1885) • To avoid war, 14 European countries meet • Est. rules for dividing Africa • Interesting Notes • Not a single African ruler attended • By 1914, only Liberia and Ethiopia remained free
