  1. 5S Kaizen Blitz Methodology Principles SUSTAIN STANDARDIZE STABILIZE PLAN SORT SHINE Plan – Plan the project and create agenda, determine resource requirements, define scope and objectives.Fill in “charter” such as the POWER Charter template. Standardize – Standardize the processes and procedures so that process owners can operate effectively. Use visual SOPs (standard operating procedures) to demonstrate step by step what to do. Standardize the thinking and share the ideas to others (yokoten). Shine – Clean up and shine up the entire area to ensure safety is priority one. Get rid of all items that are no longer needed under the new visual system. Sort – Sort through materials and items, and determine what are really needed and what can be stored, thrown away, or sold. Designate red tag areas to temporarily store unnecessary items (or use red tags if too big to move). Auction off items. Bring back only what is really required. Stabilize– Set in order various items used. Organize materials and tools so that they can be accessed easily. Use visual tools and methods. Create agenda and basic plan Do a comprehensive cleaning. Sustain – Deliver final summary and recommendations to sustain 5S for the long term. Calculate the square footage saved through 5S. Estimate the time and cost saved through improved flow (due to less physical movement of people and materials). Provide clear 5S strategy for the future. REPORT OUT: Report out the results to the Process owners and Sponsors. Mark unwanted items as red tag materials or move to red tag area. Designate items as: Make it easy to find materials and tools Determine which areas to 5S and required resources Shine is everyone’s business Needed for sure Use clearly marked bins and containers to organize. Mark lines on the floor as appropriate. Maybe, not sure Don’t need for sure Auction off red and yellow items, and keep blue items Calculate current square footage and take “before” photos Ensure that process owners are involved. Take “after” photos.

How to deal with common challenges • Keep from Fidgeting • Hold something in your hand • Avoid using pens with “click” • Physical movement • Move around the room • Eye contact – scan all participants • Handling Q & A: • Staying in scope, parking, noting for follow-up • Addressing disruptive behavior • Ask questions – purposely engage that person • Bring focus back to scope of material and time available • Silence (if someone is talking) • Technical difficulties • Always have hard copy of your presentation • Photocopy and distribute if necessary • If something goes wrong, get people to break up into groups for discussion • You can always deliver great presentations without the actual powerpoint slides
