  2. Truth vs. Tradition • 1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. (Mark 7:1-2)

  3. Wash Your Hands • 1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders; (Mark 7:1-3)

  4. Wash Your Hands • 4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.) 5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?” (Mark 7:4-5)

  5. Wash Your Hands • 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders; 4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.) (Mark 7:3-4)

  6. Wash Your Hands • “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” (Mark 7:8) • Neglecting the Word of God leads to the invention of man-made rules and religions (vv. 1-4)

  7. Hypocrites • 5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?” 6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 7 BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’ 8 Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” (Mark 7:5-8)

  8. Hypocrites • Neglecting the Word of God leads to an imitation spirituality (vv. 5-6) • God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

  9. Hypocrites • 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. (Psalm 51:16-17)

  10. True Spirituality • “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15) • But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Timothy 1:5) • But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

  11. True Spirituality • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love. (Galatians 5:6) • For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” [Lev. 19:18] (Galatians 5:14)

  12. True Spirituality • This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. (1 John 3:23) • And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also. (1 John 4:21)

  13. True Spirituality • Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

  14. Idolatry • 6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 7 BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’” (Mark 7:6-7) • Neglecting the Word of God leads to idolatry (vv. 6-7)

  15. Immorality • 8 “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’ [Exodus 20:12]; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’ [Exodus 21:17]; (Mark 7:8-10)

  16. Immorality • 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” (Mark 7:11-13)

  17. Immorality • Neglecting the Word of God leads to immorality (vv. 8-12) • Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. (Psalm 119:11)

  18. Invalid • 8 “Neglectingthe commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’; (Mark 7:8-10)

  19. Invalid • 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidatingthe word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” (Mark 7:11-13)
