  3. Purpose • The following exercise will provide a better understanding on how to use the Group Policy Management console to create user and computer based policies.

  5. Introduction: Joy Fluker • Hello my name is Joy Fluker. I live about 20 miles north of Atlanta, GA. I work as a IT Business Relations Manager for my company • I am attending DSU for my Doctoral Degree in Information Systems. My husband is attending at Southern Poly for his M.S. in Information Technology. We both have three children ranging from 14 to 8. • I currently have a B.S. in Information Systems, an M.A. in Communications Management and a M.S. in Information Systems • I am also currently in training to teach part time for the University of Phoenix Axia college Ecommerce program

  6. Introduction: Dennis Duggan • My name is Dennis Duggan. I live and work in New Jersey • My undergraduate degree is in Information Systems • I work for the US Army as an Information Technology Specialist.

  7. Introduction: David Vessell • My name is David Vessell and I live in St. Louis, Missouri. I’ve been in the MSIS program at DSU since the fall of 2008. • I was in the IT field for 10 years and have been teaching Web Development and Linux courses over the last 9 years at ITT Tech in Arnold, Missouri. • My other projects are managing my website and I am the half owner and technical manger of Cygnus Radio. • I am the father of 2 and we are doing the “Autism Walk” in October to raise money for Autism research.

  8. Introduction: Antoine Ross • My name is Antoine Ross and I live in Springfield, Virginia which is located 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. My undergraduate degree is from West Virginia University. This is my fifth semester at DSU in the MSIS program. Currently, I work for The MITRE Corporation in the Networking Group. • I am married (wife-Brenda), and have 2 children (AC is 2 1/2 years old and Ella is 1). • I am a huge sports fan and enjoy coaching youth league sports. I also enjoy taking family vacations to the beach and camping in the mountains.

  18. 1. On the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain controller (AD DC), click Start.

  19. 2. In the Search text box, type gpmc.msc and press Enter.

  20. 3. In the console tree, expand Forest and then Domains.

  21. 4. In the details pane, right-click the Default Domain Policy and select Edit.

  22. 5. In the console tree, below Computer Configuration, expand Policies - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Account Policies and then select Password Policy.

  23. 6. Observe the Password Policy settings. 7. In the console tree below User Configuration, expand Policies - Administrative Templates and then select Control Panel.

  24. 8. In the details pane, double-click on Prohibit access to the Control Panel.

  25. 9.Select Enabled.

  26. 10.Click OK.

  27. 11. This policy setting will affect you as an administrator. The next steps will show how to avoid the "Prohibit access to the Control Panel" feature from affecting you as an administrator. 13. Log off and log back on as the domain Administrator. Let Windows load fully and then observe the Start menu. 14. At the member server, log off and log back on to apply the user policy. Let Windows load fully and then observe the Start menu.

  28. 15. On your AD DC, switch back to the Group Policy Object Editor for the Default Domain Policy.

  29. 16. Set the "Prohibit access to the Control Panel" setting to "Not configured."

  30. 17. Verify you can access Control Panel on your Windows Server 2008 member server.

  31. 18. Close Group Policy Object Editor.

  32. Conclusion • In closing, this exercise is one of many that show the capabilities in using group policy management console in Windows Server 2008. Having administrator privileges gives the option for client and server environment to be set by making policies in the Active Directory.
