  2. Anarchy 1. Anarchy- This is basically living without rules or laws

  3. Democracy 2 types of democracy: 2. direct democracy- 3. representative democracy Ancient Rome is an example of a direct democracy -Every citizen went to the capital to vote on issues. The USA is an example of a representative democracy. -We elect people to represent us in Congress and at the state level (Raleigh).

  4. Monarchy 4. monarchy- England is an example of a monarchy. Even though it does has another body who makes the laws, England is still led by a Queen (at the moment)

  5. Socialist 5. socialist- Basically government plays a larger role in citizen’s lives, such as regulating education, trade, and banks.

  6. Communist 6. communist- You do not decide your job, if you go to college, etc. The government decides it for you.

  7. Authoritarian 7. dictatorship- 8. totalitarianism-F 9. oligarchy-

  8. Religious 10.theocracy- Currently found in the Middle East and ruled by Islamic leaders and the Vatican City in Rome, ruled by the Pope (the head of the Catholic Church)

  9. What is a constitution? • A constitution is the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed. • Do we have a constitution? • Turn to p 752 in your textbooks and we will read over the preamble’s to constitutions from other countries.

  10. Question? • 1. What does the statement from the Russian constitution “multinational people…united by a common destiny” mean? • 2. What do you think it means to “promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty”? Have we heard that before?? • 3. In what ways do racist or extreme policies affect countries and bring harm to people? • 4. Compare the preambles we read. How are they similar or different?

  11. Finishing up… • On a sheet of paper, explain what you believe is the purpose of a preamble to a constitution. • (Write 2-3 sentences) • Then identify which preamble best expresses that purpose and tell me why.
