  1. Non-ferrous mining 4 november 2003 Wouter Wermink Robin Hink Niels Sijbrandi

  2. Gold mining sector • Largest gold resource in the world (35%) • 98.9% of total sales were export sales (2002) • Gold mining contributes 4% to GDP (2000) • Gold production decreased the last decade

  3. Gold mining sector • Gold production 1993 - 2002

  4. PGMs mining sector • Platinum demand and supply • Platinum is mostly used for jewellery and auto catalysts

  5. PGMs mining sector • Palladium demand and supply • Palladium is mostly used for autocatalyst, dental and electronics

  6. Geographic positions • Mining of gold in ‘the golden arc’ • Mining of PGMs, chrome, nickel and vanadium in Bushveld Igneous Complex

  7. South Africa 8,1 % BBP (to 12%) Europe 7% BBP Environmental pressure Netto importer Mining companies Economy

  8. Chamber of Mines Mining Houses (1882) Investors Geologic survey Technology Euromines Extractive Industry Banks Equipment Partnerships

  9. Mine closure Core business Lower activity Only regional importance Changes

  10. Government • Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) • 2000 publication The Mineral and Petroleum Resource Development Draft Bill • “Mineral resources is the common heritage of all South Africans and belongs collectively to all the peoples of South Africa” • In 10 years: 26 % mine-industry in hands of HDSA’s (historically disadvantaged South Africans)

  11. Government • Government and mining industry collaborate to improve the skills of HDSA’s • The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI). 0,74 deaths and 11,5 injuries per thousand mineworkers at year-end • Global Dialogue on mining, metals and sustainable development

  12. HIV/AIDS in the mining industry • 5 – 10% of their employees dies through aids • HIV infections in the mining industry is 7 a 17% higher than by other populations. Prognosis: 50 % higher in couple of years • Partnerships between government, business and labour unions

• Reserves in 1999: 35.877 ton, • Productie in 1999: 451 ton.

  18. Stellingen HIV/AIDS doodsteek voor mijnindustrie?
