Definitions of ‘Digital Library’ (1) A networked collection of digital objects -- text, still images, moving images, sound, data -- with arrangement, search features and metadata that allow for discovery and presentation, supporting research and teaching, and with attention paid to architecture, persistence, longevity, and digital preservation.

  3. Definitions of ‘Digital Library’ (2) A collection of digital information objects; the services that support users in locating, retrieving, and accessing these information objects; the methods used to organize and present those objects; and the information technologies by which they are made available to users.

  4. Key Elements • Interoperable – with the important goal of cross-collection searching • Within Indiana University • Across other institutions worldwide • Persistent – reliably accessible • Re-usable – repositories of digital objects that can be used for multiple purposes

  5. What is the IU Digital Library Program? • A collaborative organizational unit – campuswide and systemwide – created to: • Provide financial support and human resources to support for existing digital library initiatives; • Provide infrastructure, financial support, and expertise to develop new digital initiatives across the campuses of Indiana University. • provide leadership in the development of digital libraries locally, nationally, and internationally. • The partners: IU Libraries, University Information Technology Services, School of Library and Information Science, and School of Informatics

Sources of Funding • Internal funding • Infrastructure – hardware, software, staff • Services: LETRS, DMIC • Instructional services: Variations, DIDO • Consultation • Projects: smaller, pilots, collaborative • Grant funding • National Science Foundation • Institute for Museum and Library Services • National Endowment for the Humanities

  7. Current Projects • Three will be discussed at the Forum: • Digital Library of the Commons (internal funding) • Variations2: The IU Digital Music Library (NSF) • Wright American Fiction (internal funding; joint CIC project)
