Tribal Unit Responsibilities • Administer Grants to Indian Tribal Governments and Sexual Assault Services Program • Administer Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program • Manage all OVW grant awards to Indian Tribes • Develop Training and Technical Assistance for OVW’s Tribal Grantees • Oversee certain aspects of Title IX of VAWA 2005

  3. Tribal Activities for 2009 • Adapting DOJ Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Protocol for use in Tribal Communities. • November 2009 Focus Group on Adult Sexual Assault in Indian Country to discuss strategies for increasing tribal applications addressing this issue.

  4. Other projects • Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence: Services, Training, Access, and Resource Project • Oklahoma Summit on Violence Against Indian women, “Journey to Justice,” is being held December 2-3, in OKC.

  5. Coordination with NIJ on Research Program • Section 904 Task Force on Violence Against Women in Indian Country was appointed in April 2008 – 17 members on TF • OVW has worked with NIJ to hold three task force meetings • A proposed Research Program of Study was presented last December which has guided the Task Force work over the coming year

  6. Grants to Indian Tribal Governments Program Created in VAWA 2005 Consolidated tribal set-asides from 7 other OVW programs Replaced the STOP Violence Against Indian Women Program

  7. Grants to Indian Tribal Governments Program – Awards • Almost $100 million awarded since 2007 • Approximately $20 million awarded in 2009 Recovery Act • Over $15 million awarded to Alaska Tribal Governments, Consortia and/or Authorized Designees since 2007
