  1. Zebras By Mrs. Thomas

  2. Zebras • Member of the horse family with an eye-catching coat of black and white stripes. • Found only in Africa, but their remarkable markings make them among the most familiar mammals in the world.

  3. Zebras There are three species of zebras, each with a distinctive stripe pattern: • Grévy’s zebra • Mountain zebra • Plains zebra (also known as Burchell’s zebra).

  4. Grévy’s Zebra • The largest zebra, weighing up to 450 kg (990 lb). • Vertical stripes on its body are narrow and close together, covering most of the body except the belly. • Frequents the plains and brush country of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya.

  5. Mountain Zebra • Lives in the mountainous areas of South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. • Once on the brink of extinction, the mountain zebra population is on the rebound thanks to effective conservation programs.

  6. Plains Zebra • The broad-striped zebra found over most of southern and eastern Africa. • Unlike other zebra species, the vertical stripes on this zebra’s back extend around to the belly. • Some animals show a faint brown “shadow” stripe between the main flank stripes.

  7. Zebras: Names • adult male: stallion • adult female: mare • adolescent female: filly • adolescent male: colt • young: foal • group: herd
