  4. 1 2 3 4 Some positive signs Current smoking prevalence* among adults (15+) NZ’s rate of daily smoking was the 4th lowest in the OECD in 2007, and we have close to the highest rate of decline between 1995 and 2007 Daily smoking prevalence has declined 54% for girls and 59% for boys (14-15 yrs) since 1999 Daily smoking prevalence* among Year 10s * The definition of current smoker is the WHO one of a person who has smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their life and smokes currently at least once a month.

  7. ABC is a reminder of what to do A - ask whether a person smokes B - give brief advice to quit to all people who smoke C – make an offer of cessation treatment

  8. 1 in 40 smokers will quit for good, just because they’ve received brief advice

  9. From July 2011 the target extends to primary care, “90% of enrolled patients who smoke and are seen in general practice will be provided with brief advice and support to quit.”
