  2. Coming to western Canada • Canada was not an attractive place for immigrants • The trip from other continents was very long and often dangerous • In the 1880s however, people began flooding to the West • WHY?

  3. Why do you think people “flooded” into Canada’s West?

Canada needed immigrants! • In 1881, 4 381 256 lived in Canada • This is compared to 34 482 779 today! • Immigrants largely make up this population difference • 89% of the population was either British or French and the majority of them lived in the East • Currently, the West was largely populated by the First Nations and the Canadien who had explored there during the height of the fur trade

The Laurier Factor • Sir Wilfred Laurier was Canada’s first French Prime Minister • He is famous for saying, “The twentieth century belongs to Canada!” • He meant that Canada’s economy was about to get very big and he thought Canada would become a great nation • So what did Laurier need? • He needed people • In particular, he needed people to establish farms in Western Canada • Remember that a strong farming economy would strengthen the entire country

  6. The Laurier Factor • Laurier also needed people to work for Canada’s growing industry • Look at figure 11.2 on page 246 • Was Laurier successful bringing people to Canada • Brainstorm ways Laurier may have been able to convince people to move to Canada
