Disease and Pest Protection: Organic • Hand picking and squishing/soapy water bowl • Protective Bags • Orchard Sanitation • Companion Plants • Beneficial insects • Organic Sprays
Spraying • Kaolin clay • Compost tea • Hot pepper mixture • Blend hot peppers, garlic, onions in a gallon of water • Homemade fungicides • 4 teaspoons of baking soda or apple cider vinegar • ½ tablespoon of Citrus oil • ½ tablespoon of molasses • One gallon of water *spray lightly, test a small area for the first couple of days
Orchard Sanitation • Prune off infected areas quickly • Do not compost • Sanitize pruners between each cut • Cleanly prune any dead/broken branches • Prune open canopy to allow more sunshine and circulation • Water the soil rather than the tree • Clean up leaves at the base • Shred into a mulch, compost, or rake away • Remove/compost all rotting fruit from the ground and tree
Animal Protection: Birds • Hanging shiny and/or noise making objects • CDs • Soda cans • Wind chimes • Netting Structures • Protective fruit bags

Animal Protection: Rodents Rats: • Install a smooth surface wrap around the base of the trunk at least a foot high Rabbits: • Paint the base of the trunk with white latex paint mixed with Thiram (a distasteful but harmless fungus)
Harvesting • Most fruit ripens on tree • Color • Softness • Ease of separation • Fruit drop • Smell • Some fruit needs or can be picked unripe (European Pears) • Store in a paper bag • Store in a dark area at room temperature * European Pears need a chill period at 30 degrees for 1-7 days before storage • Tools • Harvesting pole • Harvesting Ladder *always pick ripe fruit before it rots!
