  3. Research • A shock absorber is a mechanical device designed to smooth out or damp shock, impulse, and dissipate kinetic energy. It is a type of dashpot. • In physics , a force is any influence that causes an object to undergo a certain change, either concerning its movement, direction, or geometrical construction. It is measured with the SI unit of newtons and represented by the symbol F. In other words, a force is that which can cause an object with mass to change its velocity (which includes to begin moving from a state of rest), i.e., to accelerate, or which can cause a flexible object to deform. Force can also be described by intuitive concepts such as a push or pull. A force has both magnitude and direction, making it a vector quantity. • The original form of Newton's second law of state states that the net force acting upon an object is equal to the rate at which its momentum changes with time. If the mass of the object is constant, this law implies that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on the object, is in the direction of the net force, and is inversely proportional the mass of the object. As a formula, this is expressed as: • \VEC(F)=M\VEC(A)

  6. Hypothesis • We believe that the balloons will protect the egg from destruction best due to its rubber shock absorbency and air within the balloon.

  7. Materials • Styrofoam cups • Eggs • Cotton balls • Popcorn • Balloons • Tape • Aluminum foil • Tape measure

Procedure • Pack one cup halfway with X material • Place egg in the cup • Pack the cup the rest of the way • Seal the top of the cup with aluminum foil and tape down • Drop the cup from 1 foot • Check to see if egg is broken • Progress in height until the egg breaks • Repeat 1-7 for the rest of the materials.

  10. Conclusion In conclusion, our hypothesis “We believe that the balloons will protect the egg from destruction best due to its rubber shock absorbency and air within the balloon.” was wrong. The packing material that withstood the highest dropping point until destruction was popcorn. Some problems that could have occurred during our project was the material deforming more and more after we dropped the cup. For example, when we dropped the egg with the popcorn, the popcorn kept breaking. For this experiment we did not collect enough data to make a overall generalization because the height at which the egg broke varied no matter which packing material.
