  2. Federal Government • Constitution- supreme law of the US • What type of government do we have in the US? • Sets up 3 branches: • 1. Legislative, 2. Executive, 3. Judicial

  3. Legislative Branch • Legislative branch is covered first in the Constitution • -it lists the requirements & responsibilities of the legislature • “Bicameral”- 2 houses : What are they?? • b. Powers- • -HOR’s: impeach, raise taxes • -Senate: ratifies treaties, confirms Cabinet, try those impeached

  4. Executive Branch • The President • Chosen by the electoral college • Natural born citizen, 35, resident of the US for 14 yrs • 4 year term, re-elected once • d. Powers: veto, pardon, etc.

  5. Judicial Branch • The Supreme Court & all federal lower courts • 9 judges, appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate • Serve for life or until retirement or death • c. Powers: declare laws or presidential acts unconstitutional, forbid executive action through “injunctions”, choose cases it will hear

  6. State Government- MS 1. 3 branches: a. Executive: governor (??) b. Legislative: “Bicameral”- HOR’s & Senate c. Judicial: State Supreme Court, Chancery, & Circuit Courts

  7. Executive Branch: Governor a. How does one become Gov? elected b. Terms? 2 c. Requirements: 30 yrs old, citizen for 20 yrs (US), res. Of MS for 5 prior to the election d. Powers: enforces, executes, & administers the laws of the state Current Governor: Phil Bryant

  9. Judicial Branch Supreme Court: a. 9 Justices b. Terms: 8 yrs c. Requirements: 30 yrs old, practicing attorney, citizen for 5 years prior to the election d. Powers: basically same as USSC, hears appeals from circuit court & chancery court

  10. Chancery Court: -NO jury -divorce, custody, wills Circuit Court: -jury -criminal cases

  12. County Government • What county do we live in? • County officials include: supervisors, sheriffs, tax collector, & clerks (records)

  13. Supervisors a. Chief administrative & policy making body of the county • 4 year terms - Powers: maintains roads, maintenance, taxes, & budget

  14. Tax Collector b. Collects Taxes for the county Judy Fortenberry- Rankin County

  15. Clerk c. Record keeping, marriage licenses, minutes from meetings (circuit clerk) d. Receives all papers relating to divorce, adoption, estates, child support/custody (chancery clerk) Circuit Clerk-Rebecca Boyd Chancery Clerk-Larry Swales

  19. What’s a City’s Purpose? b. • To provide services to its citizens • Some examples include: 1. Garbage pickup 2. Water service 3. Police/firemen

  21. How are Cities Financed? d. • TAXES! • ad-valorem (Property, Personal) • Tax rates • Mils= 1/10 of a cent • $1 per $1,000 of assessed value of property • Portion of the state’s sales tax (What is MS’s?) 3. Federal grants & fees 4. Homestead exemption reimbursements
