The Digestive System

The digestive system is essential for breaking down food into smaller pieces and absorbing nutrients into the bloodstream. It includes major organs such as the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. This system interacts closely with the circulatory system, where digested food is converted into nutrients. Using peristalsis, food moves through the digestive tract, taking about 24 hours to complete the process. Explore more through our informative video and additional resources.

  2. Functions • To break down foods into smaller pieces. • To absorb digested food into the blood circulatory system as nutrients for the body. • Picture:

  3. Major Organs: • Small Intestine • Large Intestine • Anus • Rectum • Esophagus • Liver • Pancreas • Appendix • Stomach • Mouth • Gallbladder

  4. Interactions Digestive • The digestive system interacts with the circulatory system. The small intestine absorbs digested food into the circulatory system as nutrients for the body. Circulatory

  5. Process • Food gets chewed, then it moves from the mouth into the pharynx ,down the esophagus, and into the stomach. Through peristalsis ,the muscular action of the stomach, the food is churned. Digestive juices supplied by the liverand the pancreas emulsify the food and convert it into a semiliquid mass. The smallintestineabsorbs digested food into the blood circulatory system as nutrients for the body. The large intestine condenses unused food matter and expels it through the rectum and anus. About 24 hours is required for food to pass through the digestive tract.
