  1. Important Astronomers and Layers of the Sun Review

  2. What is geocentric? The idea that everything revolves around the Earth

  3. What is heliocentric? The idea that planets revolve around the Sun

  4. What were the Greek’s ideas? • Believed in a geocentric system • All the planets moved together in a dome

  5. What were Ptolemy’s ideas? • Believed in a geocentric system • He thought all the planets moved toward or around Earth and at different speeds.

  6. What were Copernicus’s ideas? • Believed in a heliocentric system • There are 6 planets  Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn

  7. What were Galileo’s ideas? • Believed in a heliocentric system • He proved heliocentric theory  • 4 moons of Jupiter disproves that not everything revolves around Earth • Venus goes through phases like our moon- this couldn’t happen unless the sun was in the center, so it definitely supports a heliocentric system

  8. What were Brahe’s ideas? • Believed in a geocentric system • Made many mathematical calculations and observations that paved the way for Kepler and other astronomers

  9. What were Kepler’s ideas? • Believed in a heliocentric system • The planets travels on elliptical (oval) orbits

  10. What is the inner most layer of the sun and what’s its job? • The core • Where nuclear fusion occurs

  11. What is the next layer of the sun and what’s its job? • The radiation zone • Region of tightly packed gas

  12. What is the final inner layer of the sun’s interior and what’s its job? • The convection zone • Hot gases gradually rise

  13. What is the job of the photosphere? • The layer that gives off light

  14. What is the job of the chromosphere? • The layer that gives off a reddish glow at the beginning and end of an eclipse

  15. What is the job of the corona? • The layer that looks like a white halo during a total eclipse
