  2. ¹ handover possible? to UMTS to GSM- cs to GSM-GPRS to IMT2000 UMTS From UMTS O O O x From GSM- cs O oos oos oos From GSM-GPRS O oos oos oos ¹ x oos oos oos From IMT2000 UMTS oos = out of scope of UMTS specifications O = supporting standards required for UMTS release 99. x= supporting standards required, not necessarily for release 99. IMT-2000UMTS: different system from UMTS (WCDMA) e.g. Cdma2000 Handover requirements/Matrix (TS22.129) • UMTS R99 shall be defined which: • Enable handover to a GSM network from a UMTS network • Enable handover to a UMTS network from a GSM network • Handover of real time PS services between UMTS and GPRS R99 is out of the scope of UMTS R99 phase 1. • Service continuity of best effort packet services between UMTS and GPRS is required.

  3. Handover type • Intra-handover - Internal handover: between channels on a cell or cells controlled by a single BSS, without reference to the MSC - External handover: between channels on a same cell or between cells on the same BSS which are controlled by MSC - Intra-3G_MSC GSM to UMTS handover: from BSS to RNS controlled by the same 3G_MSC - Intra-3G_MSC UMTS to GSM handover: from RNS to BSS controlled by the same 3G_MSC • Inter-handover - Inter-MSC handover (1) Basic Inter-MSC handover: MSC-A to MSC-B (2) Subsequent Inter-MSC handover: MSC-B to MSC-C (3) Subsequent Inter-MSC handback: MSC-B to MSC-A - Inter-3G_MSC handover (1) UMTS to GSM handover (2) GSM to UMTS handovezr (3) Inter-3G_MSC relocation • Inter-system handover handover between RNS and BSS, connected to same 3G_MSC which supports A-interface (this is categorized as Intra-handover) • Soft and Hard handover - Soft handover Performed within UTRAN between same frequency channels, without involving the core network - Hard handover May be also performed within UTRAN between different frequency channels, or the core network may be involved if Iur interface between RNSs does not exist.
