  2. Symbolism of Jesus’ Baptism Sky Opens – Isaiah 64:1 – Old Testament prophet: “Why don’t you tear the sky open and come down.” Symbolism: God came to his people in Jesus; mission begins.

  3. Dove descends – Ancient rabbis compared God’s spirit to a dove hovering over a newborn baby. Symbolism: Joy, peace, innocence, freedom, power; dawn of a new age.

  4. Voice speaks – “You are my own dear son.” Symbolism: The image of the voice signals the appearance of Jesus as a “New Adam.” Why a “New Adam?”
