7. Population Census 2005 Statistical Maps of Japan • Ready-made thematic maps • Formerly, provided in the form of atlas or poster to the limited users • Now, available on the web for all the public

8. What is GIS Geographic Information System

9. Statistical GIS Stat Map = Map + Stat data Stat GIS = GIS application + Boundary data of regions + Disaggregated data by region Sometimes, point data (coordinates) , such as place of the regional office, represents the region.

10. Boundary data • Administrative area • Not stable • Measures against instability • Concept of BUB (Basic Unit Block) in Japan • Grid square using latitude and longitude

11. Disaggregated data by region • Administrative area • Prefectural governments (47) • Municipalities (city, town, village) • Minimal survey area • BUB • ED

12. Geo-Relational Model Layer 1 : Roads and houses Layer 2 : Rivers Layer 3 : Land use Layer 4 : Land image Real world

18. Calculating population and the number of the households with small area statistics BUB/ED

19. Grid Square Statistics

20. Grid square statistics • Administrative boundaries have varied sometimes • == time series comparison becomes difficult • Administrative boundaries are not suitable for small area analysis The Statistics Bureau has reorganized the result of the Population Census and the Establishment and Enterprise Census into small regional square of approximately 1km2 (1Km x 1Km) and 0.25km2 (500m x 500m), dividing the whole area of Japan by latitude and longitude.

21. Assignment of enumeration districts into grid squares • Boundary data of each grid square • Statistical data by grid square

22. Grid square statistics in Japan English pages available http://www.stat.go.jp/english/data/mesh/index.htm Ready-made compiled statistical data by grid squares GIS software used for presenting maps of grid square statistics

23. Population change of Tokyo area between 1995 and 2005 by grid square statistics Red: Increase by more than 1,000 people Blue: decrease by more than 1,000 people

24. Population of the aged 65 years and over in Chugoku District and over Many marginal hamlets In intermediate and mountainous area

25. Population of the aged 65 years and over Tohoku District Chugoku District

26. DID (Densely Inhabited District)

27. Densely Inhabited District • Promotion law for consolidation of towns and villages was enforced in1953. • City Areas became larger than before and urban features of the word “city” changed. Municipal mergers 1999-2006

28. Densely Inhabited District • A DID was established as one of regional presentations for Population Census 1960. • A DID consists of adjoining basic unit blocks that have high population density of 4,000 person/Km2and overall population adds up to 5,000 residents or more. • A DID is used as one of calculation criteria for the amount of Local Allocation Tax which is annually grated from the national government to the local government. • A DID is also used as a basis for planning policy such as town planning, redevelopment of urban areas, or disaster prevention measures.
