  2. Multiple Choice& Reading Tips • Read all information on the test page. The info given in italics on the top often gives you an idea of what you should be paying attention to while reading.

  3. Tip #2 • When asked a question about a line, or section of lines in a passage or poem, be sure to LOOK BACK at the passage. • Read more than just the mentioned line; read at least two lines prior and two lines afterwards.

  4. Tip #3 • Use the PROCESS OF ELIMINATION • You will have many multiple choice questions. Get rid of the options that just don’t make sense. By doing so, you will leave yourself with less choices.

  5. Tip #4: Open Responses • Write the Title, author and Genre (TAG) • Include the question in your topic statement. • Discuss in detail at least 2-3 examples as evidence to support your answer. • Include quoted and paraphrased lines from the poem or passage to prove your answer as well. • Answer the question completely!

  6. TIP #5: Long Composition • Write about what you remember well. • You can write about any book you’ve read, in or out of school. • Take your time…you have all day if you need it. • Write a rough draft and edit because spelling and grammar count! • Write a final draft!

Comp Tips Continued… • Include the TAG (title-author-genre) in your intro paragraph • Include the question being asked in your thesis statement • Have at least 3 body paragraphs to support your thesis with clear topic sentences. • Use SPECIFIC examples when proving your thesis. • Be sure you wrap up all ideas in your conclusion and make the connection between your body paragraphs and the question being asked.

  8. Sample Long. Comp. Questions From a work of literature you have read in or out of school, select a character that, in your opinion is heroic. In a well developed composition, identify that character and explain why he or she is heroic.

  9. Sample Question 2 • From a work of literature you have read in or out of school, select a character that has changed by a particular event. In a well developed composition, identify the character, describe the event and then explain why the character’s change is important to the work of literature.
