  1. Think…Before You Read Before you read any story, there are certain vocabulary words you should know. Knowing these words will make it easier for you to understand your purpose for reading.

  2. Words to Remember • Title • Author • Non-fiction • Fiction • Genre • Main idea • Details • Fact • Opinion If you are unsure of a definition, use an online dictionary such as www.merriam-webster.com to find the meanings of the words.

  3. Why are these words important? These words are important to know because you will need to identify these elements in every story. Knowing if a story is fiction or non-fiction will help you know if you are reading about real people and places. Being able to identify the title lets you know what the book is about. Identifying the genre lets you know if it is a book you would be interested in reading.
