What is terrorism? • The use of violence against people or property to force changes in societies or governments • Since late 1960s – more than 14,000 terrorist attacks occurred worldwide • Terrorism Around the World • Modern international terrorism came to world attention in 1972 – Summer Olympics in Munich – two Israeli athletes were killed and nine taken hostage by a Palestinian terrorist group

Bush after 9/11 • The phrase denotes a global military, political, legal, and ideological struggle against organizations designated as terrorist and regimes that were accused of having a connection to them or providing them with support or were perceived or presented as posing a threat to the US and its allies in general. • Includes operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, the trans Sahara.

Bush labels Iraq, Iran, and North Korea members of an “axis of evil” intent on developing weapons of mass destruction • Nov. 2002 – UN security inspectors return to Iraq, backed by Security Council resolution • March 17, 2003 – Based on intelligence, later found to be faulty, claiming Saddam harbors weapons of mass destruction, G.W. Bush gives him two days to leave Iraq or face a military invasion • March 20, 2003 – War in Iraq begins as U.S. forces bomb Baghdad; grounds troops follow a few days later

Timeline of Operation Iraqi Freedom • April 9, 2003 – U.S.-led forces take control of Baghdad • April 23, 2003 - The Coalition Provisional Authority, an organization installed by the U.S. military, is created to help rebuild the government and infrastructure of Iraq. By May, the CPA is run by L. Paul Bremer until the organization is dissolved in June 2004. • May 1, 2003 - President Bush announces the end of major combat operations in Iraq in a speech on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. • August 2003 - Insurgency begins with attacks at the Jordanian embassy and U.N. headquarters in Baghdad and a car bomb explosion in Najaf, which kills 125 Iraqis. • Dec. 14, 2003 - Saddam, who fled the capital during the U.S.-led invasion, is captured in his ancestral home of Tikrit.

General David Petraeus is confirmed by Senate to lead troops • 2008 – Iraq’s parliament approves security pact with U.S. that outlines withdrawal of U.S. troops by end of 2011 • 2009 – Obama takes office and discusses possibility of withdrawing troops earlier than 2011 deadline • 2010 – the Iraqi leaders are working towards creating a new, legitimate government; future of Iraq is still somewhat uncertain
