  3. What do you want for the young people sitting in front of you each day?

The Suffolk 2028 Vision Learning and skills levels in the top quartile in the Country • “In 2028 we want Suffolk to have: • A workforce with the skills to meet the needs of Suffolk’s economy • High aspirations, and opportunities to realise them through high quality learning.” • Suffolk Community Strategy 2008 www.transformingsuffolk.co.uk A long term change programme

Skills for the Future Strategy • A county wide vision as part of transforming Suffolk • Overseen by LA with the ultimate aim is that it is owned by key stakeholders – including learning providers, businesses, voluntary sector and general public • In the early stages of development – opportunities to adopt, adapt, and act.

An Enterprise Hubfor the East of England The Eastern Enterprise Hub The National Enterprise Academy Hub Programmes for 14-19 yr olds & Higher Education programmes The School for Social Entrepreneur- ship Programmes Supporting anyone with an idea to build a social enterprise The 5th Floor Business Club and Commercial A club that Recognises/involves businesses in the Hub and gives something back to them. Programmes for established businesses. Wider Enterprise Support Activities in partnership with other enterprise delivery parts that provide the wider support package for new businesses.

Challenges facing young people Five trends shape the current labour market and impact on the employment prospects of young people not going to university: • The reduced number of low-skilled jobs • The diminished number of semi-skilled manufacturing jobs • The continued rise of service sector jobs • The growing need for jobs at technical level • The rise of jobs at professional and managerial level (The Forgotten Half – DEMOS report 2011)

Priority Sectors for Suffolk • Health and Social Care – demographic time bomb in Suffolk esp. care for the elderly (Suffolk NHS employs 1 in 7 of the total population of Suffolk and not just in health) • Energy - The nuclear industry is set to expand and with the proposed Sizewell C development in Suffolk creating 5000 construction jobs and 900 operational jobs. • Tourism - The largest proportions of tourism workplaces are located in Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, Aldeburgh, Felixstowe and Ipswich.
