  1. Master Streams

  2. Master Stream Training Available... • Awareness and Operations Training • Portable Monitors • Offensive Strategies • Defensive Strategies • Current Applications • Attack Strategies • In-Depth Education • Training Aspects

  3. Deck Guns, Portable Monitors & Bomb Lines • High flow for large fires • Can be put into service quickly • For Offensive or Defensive Attacks • Operated from Apparatus • Operated on Ground with Portable Base

  4. Why rethink our attack strategy? • Need for higher flows - Both interior and exterior • Higher fire loading in the structures • More numerous hazardous materials • Modern engines with higher flows

  5. Why rethink our attack strategy? • Changes in manning • How do we improve our flow with less people? • Larger diameter hose for moving water greater distances with less friction loss • Development of small lightweight portable monitors to handle the larger flows

  6. Conflicting goals? How are we going toINCREASE FLOWS and EFFECTIVENESSwith LESSPERSONNEL?

  7. Tactical Choices... What will be your first line pulled? • 1 3/4” Preconnect • 2 1/2” Preconnect • Preconnected Bomb Line with single 3” Line (2nd line optional)

  8. Lots of Fire...Minimum Personnel... • 1 3/4” - 2firefighters flow 160 GPM • (80 GPM each) • 2 1/2” - 3 firefighters flow 250-300 GPM • (80-100 GPM each) • Bombline -3 firefighters flow 500-1000 GPM • (160-330 GPM each)

  9. Options for attack? For 1000 GPM delivery: • 1 - 4” Bombline 3 Firefighters • 3 - 3” Attack Lines 9 Firefighters • 5+ 1 3/4” Handlines 10+ Firefighters equals equals

  10. Monitor Reaction Force... • High flows mean high reaction forces • Portable monitors must be secured to prevent sliding & lifting • Do not exceed manufacturer’s recommended operating flow & pressure

  11. Reaction Forces Nozzle Reaction Flow(GPM) Nozzle Pressure 502 (13/8”SB) 80 psi 227 lb/f 500 100 psi 253 lb/f 750 100 psi 379 lb/f 1000 100 psi 505 lb/f 1250 100 psi 631 lb/f

  12. Comparative Thrust Power (140 H.P.) Equal to a portable monitor flowing1000 GPM!

  13. Weight has little to do with it Not securing your portable monitor is just asking for trouble!

  14. Possible Securing Points for Monitors... • Parking Meters • Mailboxes • Trees • Parked Cars • Traffic Signs • Telephone Poles • Front Looped Hoselines • Non-removable Street Drains

  15. Additional Means for Safe Operation... • Use a life safetyrope to extend the length of the chains or tie off strap • Interior work; use a long pry bar in doorway • Use the door jam itself • Span two immovable objects with life safetyrope, keeping the angle as straight as possible

  16. Elevation Safety Stop Pin... • It is a SAFETYSTOP ! • NEVER pull (override) in portable mode • Reaction forces will remain within footprint of portable monitor base, unless pulled • Should only be pulled when monitor is mounted on deck pipe on apparatus • Make sure stop pin is engaged when changing from deck mode to portable mode • Always use tie down method to secure monitor
