  4. Chemical Properties • It is soft • It is malleable • It exhibits a bright silvery luster • It slowly reacts with water

  5. Uses of Ytterbium • It is used for portable x-ray machines that do not need electricity • Acts as an industrial catalyst

  6. History of Ytterbium • It was discovered by Jean De Marignac • Discovered in Switzerland in 1878 • Named after the village “Ytterby” near Vaxholm in Sweden

  8. Ytterbium was the first rare earth to be discovered, and is the most common of the rare earths. • It is impossible to get 100% pure Ytterbium. • It is more common than tin, bromine, uranium, and arsenic. • Ytterbium metal (99.9% pure) costs about $360 per kilogram. (as of 2/8/2004)
