  2. What are the Palestinian Territories? Palestinian territories are defined as the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

  3. Basic Facts • Population: 4.3 million • Major Language is Arabic • Major Religion is Islam • Life Expectancy: 75 years (women), 72 years (men) • Main Export is citrus

Basic Facts continued… • West Bank is 75% Muslim, 17% Jewish, 8% Christian and other • Gaza Strip is 98.7% Muslim • West Bank is 2,3o5 square miles and the Gaza Strip is 141 square miles • Palestinian leader is Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the Fatah faction. • Hamas, the militant Islamic group, gained control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict • 60 Minutes Video • After the decline of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Palestine for four centuries, Palestine was placed under the British Mandate for Palestine in 1922 • The division of this mandate and the creation of Israel in 1948, which stemmed from a Zionist movement to create a homeland for Jews from around the world, led to disputes about land • The key issues in the conflict include mutual recognition, borders, security, water rights, control of Jerusalem, land rights, and legalities concerning refugees
