  2. 1. TIME, TIME, TIME “The only vacations I ever remember taking were on mission trips with our church youth group.” —Youth Pastor’s Son Time spells love to every child, but especially to pastor’s kids

TIME TIPS • Family dinner around the table • Eliminate phone calls during family gatherings • “Family Date Nights” • Adjust your schedule • Keep church work in the office • Date nights with one child at a time • One day off each week • Play board games and do puzzles • Attend the children’s special school and sporting events • Celebrate the children’s special accomplishments • Take yearly family vacations

  4. 2. Be a Team Together “We want our children to grow up with concern for others. As a result, we have created opportunities for them to participate in ministry.” —Catherine Hickem Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10, NIV).

NURTURING YOUR CHILD • Value your child’s personhood • Choose positive, uplifting and affirming words • Show respect to your children • Meaningful touches (hugs) • Don’t show favoritism • Allow your children to make some decisions • Don’t answer questions for your children • Help them adjust to new situations • Pray for and with your children daily • Encourage your children’s spiritual growth

  8. 4. Maintain a Moral Foundation by Setting Clear Boundaries A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls (Proverbs 25:28, NLT ). Their behavior is not about your reputation…

  9. ESTABLISHING A SOLID MORAL FOUNDATION • Discuss issues of morality openly and honestly • Establish standards for movies and television • Guard the relationships of your children • Monitor Internet usage • Establish curfews and time restrictions • Be consistent and loving in all your decisions

  10. 5.Let Your Kids Be Normal Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3, NIV). “Does anyone here paint?”

  11. IDEAS FOR KEEPING KIDS NORMAL! • Word of God • Don’t allow your self-worth to be tied to your children’s behavior • Protect your children from church members • Be confidential with your children’s business

  12. 6. Listen More; Preach Less! “Every time I tried to talk to my dad, all I heard was a sermon.”—39 Year-Old Preacher’s Kid Yes, you are their pastor, but not their live-in prophet!

  13. STEPS TO NOT BECOMING THE 24-HOUR PROPHET • Allow your children to express their genuine emotions • Be available to listen • Be understanding

  14. 7. Be Authentic in the Pulpit and in Private! You may fool a congregation, but you’ll never fool your kids!—Peggy Morris Do your kids know that you know you’re human?

STEPS TO STAYING REAL • Humbly ask your child’s forgiveness when necessary • Don’t talk in “preacher” voice • Practice what you preach • Be genuine in your relationship with Jesus • Laugh a lot • Don’t lie • Treat your children and others with respect • Show sincere affection to your spouse and children.
