Academic Early Warning: Origin • Aims • To motivate student’s study • To provide low-achievement students with timely counseling • To build up better learning environment in school • Low-achievement students • Undergraduate students with bad habits which may influence their learning outcome. • Frequent absence, learning inertia, and avoidance from learning activities, etc. 3

Academic Early warning:Method • Investigation of poor academic achievement is overall planned by Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), implemented by each college, department and learning center in cooperation with instructors in counseling. • Be operated once per semester and completed within two weeks after midterm. • Be 100% completed, even though students of the subject are with no need. • After compiling the list of substandard students, OAA will inform every college of departments to register these students as main consulting target . • Each unit has to set up specific measures of consulting and track student’s improvement.

Academic Early warning: Chronology 2003 Fall Midterm early warning system is developed and serves as a convenient way for instructors to upload warning information of undergraduate students online. 2002 In 2nd Academic Affair Meeting, it’s agreed that even there’s no need to upload students early warning data, still professor should register it. 2001 In 3rd Academic Affair Meeting, Academic early warning is set up based on ‘main guideline on execution of student’s academic early warning’ 2000 Midterm early warning is carried out, and also timely consulting for substandard students 1999 Spring If undergraduate student fails more than 50% credits two times, he/she should be dropped out.

Academic Early warning: Results • With teachers’ active cooperation on helping students understanding their own learning progress, it’s possible to timely adjust learning schedule • Online early warning system allows both teacher and student to check learning status • Professors' full cooperation with early warning

After-School Consulting: Students of failing 50% credits • To enhance the efficacy of study resource, and help students of failing 50% credits, and of multi-project, teachers are recommended to give advice to students and record their response so as to know more about their learning • Through tutors, students failing over 50% credits are aided, and excellent students are recommended to form study groups in order to enhance grades OAA OSA Dept. After-school consulting: Individual consult Stydy Discussion Room • Our school established student’s LDS on May 14, 2009 by making it a free and comfortable environment to study. • With free consult, open learning space, internet, and relaxing fun area, it facilitates students with learning, discussion, and interaction. • Learning and Discussion Space offers one-by-one course consult and space for discussion • http://www.learning.nkfust.edu.tw/learnspace/

Implementation After-schoolconsulting: Classtutoring 1/2 Aim • Help students with their learning in peers to enhance the learning efficiency • Undergraduate mandatory and basic curricula are prioritized on after-school consulting list • At most 2 assistants for each class tutoring. • At least 8 weeks of tutoring per semester

After-school consulting: Class tutoring 2/2 • Excellent student precursors are selected by instructors to serve as after-school class tutoring of departments to help students academically. • Open courses, such as basic course, and experiments, that match students needs • At least 120 courses are opened every school year after promoting after-school consulting program

Teaching Assistant: Origin • To enhance the teaching quality and to implement TA system, this school builds up the ‘Guidance for TA Implementation’, and administers TA workshop as well as assessment • Since 2008, we have investigated into numbers of TAs, work type, cultivation, and assessment, and construct a elimination and reward system based on survey, sort, workshop, cultivation, assessment

Definition Teaching Assistant, akaTA, is either undergraduate or graduate school students, who works as and assistant relating to teaching aid and student learning. • Counselor on learning • Bridge between teachers and students • Role model for students • Friend for students Realm In Charge

  20. Teaching Assistant-Classification Classification • TAs is served by graduate students or outstanding seniors, and classified into three categories:I. TA for assisting instructor’s teaching‧Help the instructor prepare teaching materials‧Assist in the class or any other teaching activitiesII. TA for practicum ‧Lead experiment, calculus, factory internshipIII. TA for after-school counseling‧Lead remedial teaching, after-school teaching

Preparation before class Help teacher collect and sort out education related data, course preparation, and upload course material In-class assistance Support teacher use teaching facilities and monitor examinations After-class assistance Help correct homework, and contact students to stay in touch Extracurricular assistance Assist student with study, data collection, answering question, and leading extracurricular discussion Reporting results Report group activities, and analyze and discuss with professor about students’ performance Teaching Assistant: Work-1 Assist teacher on academic administration

Professor can inquire TAs to arrange specific time for student’s consulting Attend class with students, observe their need and keep a note on class interaction Construct file on consulting topic for instructor’s reference on that class Once deeper questions are proposed, TA should tell the professor of that class so that it can be answer in class.   23. Teaching Assistant: Training • Participation in TA workshop by OAA is required to be qualified as TA. The workshop will be held once every school year; if not participated, it’s necessary to amend by taking 2 cultivation meeting. Without attending any of these activities, it’s considered as giving up the right to apply for scholarship • Participating in at least 1 seminar or teaching related workshop by offices or departments is required • Teaching assistants need to have a meeting with specific instructors, taking face-to-face training

  24. Teaching Assistant: Rewards • Through program of rewarding excellent TA, ten TAs are selected each semester and awarded with NTD 2,000 and one minor merit. • TA symposium is held to pass down excellent TA’s experience to other TAs
