  1. Comparing Supernova Remnants Angela Martinez December 16, 2006 Chandra Astrophysics Institute

  2. Outline • What is a Supernova Remnant? • Look at the parameters for Cas A, W49B, G11.2-0.3. • Compare the parameters of the supernova remnants to each other. • Come up with a clearer model of a supernova remnant.

  3. Introduction/Background • A supernova remnant is what is left after a massive star of 25 times or more the mass of the sun explodes. • As time goes by, the remnant expands at a rate of about 5000 km/s • Supernova remnants don’t all look the same • Supernova remnants vary in size. • A supernova remnant is made almost entirely out of gas.

  4. Data/Methods Used: Ds9, Chandra Xray Observatory. Given: Distance from earth to each remnant Energy levels of certain elements usually found in supernova remnants Found: Angular size, linear size, age, luminosity, temperature, spectrum, composition

  5. Pictures • X-ray of cas a x-ray of w49b X-ray of G11.2-0.3

  6. Results

  7. Questions -What determines the shape of supernovae. -Does the mass of the star before supernovae, determine its speed, if all supernovae speeds aren’t the same? -What determines the composition of the supernovae remnants.

  8. Next Steps • We want to find out if we can tell from a supernova remnant whether the supernova left a black hole or a neutron star.

  9. Acknowledgement • Ds9 creators • Chandra Xray Observatory • CAI Staff • Evolution of SuperNova Remnants Data Table

  10. Goals • Get the parameters on at least 4 more supernova remnants and compare with the other snr group
