  4. Mentor Sentence #1Copy this sentence on your grammar/vocab handout. "The moon was a thin, bright machete cutting its way through patches of clouds.“from In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez Consider the following: • Why is there a comma between thin and bright? • What is the moon being compared to in this sentence? • What is it called when writers use language that appeals to the senses? • To cut is a verb, but in this sentence cutting is used differently. What is it doing here?

  5. Grammar Stuff I need to Know… "The moon was a thin, bright machete cutting its way through patches of clouds.” • Use a comma between two adjectives describing the same noun. • Metaphors compare two unlike objects. Authors often use metaphors to create imagery. • Verbalsare verbs used as parts of speech that do not show action. “Cutting its way through patches of clouds” describes the machete (a noun). This means cutting is a participle, which is a verb being used as an adjective. Participles often end in –ing, -ed, or –en. • There is NO REASON to use an apostrophe for its when you are using it as a pronoun that does not show possession.

  14. Grammar Stuff I need to Know… "The skin of his face and hands was almost as white as the tablecloth drawn tightly over the bones, and the veins showed like blue branches in his face and on the top of his hands." Similescompare two unlike objects using the words like, as, than, or resembles. Similes are a type of figurative language like metaphors. Clauseshave a subject/verb pair. Phrasesdo not contain verbs. Even though a sentence is long, it doesn’t mean it is a compound-complex sentence. Sometimes it is just a lot of phrases. Compound Sentences contain two independent clauses. These clauses can be joined by a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS).

  25. Grammar Stuff I need to Know… Imitate the Mentor Sentence “Little did I know That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles And Daddy my said, “Stay away from Juliet” And I was crying on the staircase Begging you, please, don’t go.” Taylor Swift “Love Song” Allusionsrefer to famous stories or events in order to compare the circumstances. The songwriter compares her own love life, in which she is wanting to date someone of whom her parents don’t approve, to the famous story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
