Changes to Assessment Key Messages • Assessment levels removed and not replaced. • Schools have freedom to develop their own means of assessing pupils’ progress towards end of key stage expectations. • Schools may choose to continue using current systems, provided they have been modified to suit the new national curriculum. • Model assessment systems, case studies, and examples of ‘what good looks like’ in relation to the new programmes of study will be published throughout 2014. • DfE continuing to work with NAHT to support schools in the development and implementation of the new approach. • Launch of ‘assessment innovation fund’

NAHT Commission on Assessment Among the main recommendations: • Pupil progress and achievement to be descriptive profiles • Identify a trained assessment lead - CPD for all teachers • Schools to publish their principles on website from September 2014 • Schools to publish detailed framework by 2016 • Ofsted framework to include: school’s effectiveness in using assessment to improve learning in classroom and to support key points in transition between key stages and schools • Each pupil to be assessed as either ‘developing’, ‘meeting’ or ‘exceeding’ each criteria for each year
