  2. Facts about the Letter • 1 Peter written immediately before 64 AD and Nero’s persecution. • 2 Peter penned 64-66 AD, shortly before his death, 1:14. • 3:1, same readership, Gentiles scattered about in Asia Minor.

  3. Peter makes his greetings • He is a “bond-servant” and apostle Gk. doulos - slave, permanently servile i.e., a slave sent with a message • To those “allocated” a faith of equal value

  4. Peter makes his greetings • Wishes grace/peace multiplied to them in knowledge Gk. epignosis - more than facts, it denotes exact understanding “true knowledge”- a keynote for 2 Peter. Forms of this word are used 8 times in 3 chapters.

  5. He reaffirms the completeness/sufficiency of the Scriptures In view of persecution, being commissioned with a message, and exact knowledge bringing grace and peace… WHAT IS PETER’S FOCUS ?

  6. 2 Peter 2:3 • seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

  7. What is Peter’s Focus? • Divine power, i.e., power from God, has granted us EVERYTHING to live a Christ-like life and please God. • Accomplished through the epignosis, (knowledge) exact understanding. In which we live as per verse 8. EVERYTHING we need to live life and go to heaven is tied up in knowledge. NOT just the facts of knowledge, but in an exact understanding of the facts and a proper application of them.

  8. Revelation 22:18-19 • …testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19. and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

  9. 2 John 9 • Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son

  10. Through the Scriptures we Reaffirm our Relationship • We know of his personal glory and excellence… through the Scriptures • We know of his magnificent promises… through the Scriptures

  11. 1 John 1:7 • 7. but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. Promises like His available cleansing blood

  12. John 14:2-3 • 2. "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3. "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. Promises like a place prepared

  13. Hebrews 13:5 • He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU, Promises like He will NEVER desert us

  14. Through the Scriptures we Reaffirm our Relationship • We know of his personal glory and excellence… through the Scriptures • We know of his magnificent promises… through the Scriptures • We become partakers/sharers in the divine nature… through the Scriptures We share in HIS reign, love, holiness, purity, relationship

It is NOT Persecution which Peter Focuses on • God’s children are those who explicitly trust His word, • And know that it is all sufficient & complete. • Scripture establishes our relationship with Jesus, • And encourages us with magnificent promises, • Through an exact and true understanding based on fact. Where is YOUR focus?
