  7. 3. Review: Assimilation of Prefixes • A root is the basic meaning part of a word. It carries the most important part of the word’s meaning. Roots of English words often come from other languages, especially Latin. • The root usually needs a prefix or suffix to make it into a word. • Prefixes and suffixes are affixes, meaningful word parts that can be added to roots and base words • A prefix is a meaningful word part that can be added to the beginning of a root or a base word • A suffix is a meaningful word part that can be added to the end of a root or a base word

Review: Noun Suffixes • Nouns are words that name people, places, things, and ideas • Suffixes are added to the ends of base words or roots to modify or extend the meaning • -or : means “someone who, something that” • -ness : means “a state, quality, condition, or degree of” • -er : means “someone who, something that” • -ment : means “state, act, or process of” • -ist : means “someone who”

  20. Anne A Family in Hiding: Anne Frank’s Diary - At times Anne was critical of herself. She scolded herself for writing negatively about her mother. - Ann admired her father and loved him very much. - Anne was critical of her sister, and thought that she was too passive. At one point, she explained that she used to be envious of her sister’s relationship with her father. - Anne felt confident in herself. She thought she was ready to be treated like an adult. She thought she had a mind of her own and inner strength. - Anne felt that her mother treated her like a baby. This frustrated Anne. - Anne grew fond of Peter. She felt she could really talk to him.
