  1. Unit 1, Lesson 5 Blue Team 2.25.14

  2. Reading: Short Passages Unit 1

  3. Critical Reading: Short Passages • 48 multiple choice questions for both short and long passages • Read the passage and answer questions #21 and #22 on page 124 • Read pages 107-108: “Overview,” “A Closer Look at Critical Reading” and “Basic Steps for Answering Critical Reading Questions”

  4. Strategy: Types of Questions Kaplan handout: • Big Picture • Little Picture • Inference • Vocabulary-in-Context • Function • Read the questions on pages 110-111 and categorize them using the labels above

  5. Strategy: Work the Short Passages • Actively skim the passage (30 seconds max) • Don’t get bogged down in details • Select a question and determine what you are being asked • Questions appear in the order of the information • For paired passages, do questions for one passage and then the other • For difficult passages, do Little Picture questions first • Locate the material you need • If you’re given a line reference, read the surrounding material for context • If you’re not given a line reference, skim for the lines you need and reread • Predict the answer • Eliminate answers and select the best choice

  6. Strategy: Work the Short Passages Using passages 1 and 2 in the Kaplan practice packet, provide an answer for steps 2-5 as you answer questions 1-4. • Skim • Understand the question (what type of question is it? reword the question) • Locate material (what phrase gives you the answer?) • Predict an answer • Choose an answer

  7. Tips for Reading Passages Questions • With Little Picture questions, use the context to confirm your choice • Kaplan practice packet, question 10

  8. Tips for Reading Passages Questions • With Inference questions, avoid the far-fetched • Kaplan practice packet, question 14

  9. Tips for Reading Passages Questions • With Vocabulary-in-Context questions, treat it like a sentence completion question • With Vocabulary-in-Context questions, the most common meaning is rarely right (this is why it’s important to reread the context!) • Kaplan practice packet, question 9

  10. Practice • Answer the remaining questions in the Kaplan Practice Packet

  11. Sentence Errors Unit 1

  12. Review: Sentence Correction • One reason that a growing number of people have no family doctor may be that fewer and A B fewer medical students are choosing to train as C a general practitioner. D No error E

  13. Review: Sentence Correction D is correct The sentence contains a number agreement error. Since students is a plural noun, the second part of the sentence should also be plural: as general practitioners.

  14. Review: Sentence Correction 2. Under the proposed law, which many deem A B too harsh, any motorist convicted of drunk C driving would spend 30 days in prison and lose their license for five years. D No error E

  15. Review: Sentence Correction D is the correct answer The pronoun their is plural and does not agree in number with its singular antecedent, motorist. The sentence should read his or her license.

  16. Review: Sentence Correction 3. The process of learning new languages A require a commitment to memorization and B pronunciation practice, even if progress seems C D slow. No error E

  17. Review: Sentence Correction B is correct Even through languages is closer to the verb require, its subject is actually the singular process; the error is in B. A and C are correct idiomatic usage. D consistently uses a present tense verb and properly uses the adjective slow to modify the noun progress.

  18. Strategy: Understand Common Mistakes • Complete Usage Common Mistakes #13-16 in Kaplan packet • Pronoun with Ambiguous Reference • Faulty Comparison • Misuse of Adjective or Adverb • Double Negative • Practice by answering #6 on page 143 and #5 on page 147 • Additional practice: pages 191-195

  19. Review: Sentence Corrections • Princeton Review’s Error ID and Grammar Checklist • Tips • Read with checklist in mind • Eliminate answer choices that are right • Trim the fat • Don’t be afraid to pick E • Don’t get stuck on hard questions • Complete the Kaplan Practice Packet (#1-30)
