  1. Lesson 14– Unit 5 Mgr. Bc. Erika Konupčíková

  2. measurements • Metric System The metric system is an international basis of measurement based on a decimal system. It uses standard base units to name larger and smaller units. In the U.S. we use a system called the U.S. customary system. Here are some measurements (small to large). Distance: inches, feet, yards, miles. Volume: fluid ounce, gallon. Weight: ounce, pound, ton. More in thetextbookPg. 94

  3. Metric x non-metric measurements: • Short Distances Divide a length in centimetres by 2.54. This gives you the length in inches. A faster, less accurate conversion is 30 centimetres to every 12 inches. Divide a length measured in meters by 0.305. This yields a distance measured in feet. If you want yards, divide the length in meters by 0.91 • Longer Distances Divide a distance measured in kilometres by 1.6. This will tell you the distance as measured in miles. • Weight/Mass Divide a weight measured in grams by 28.4. This is a weight measured in ounces. Divide a weight measured in kilograms by 0.454. This will yield a weight measured in pounds. • Volume Divide a volume measured in litters by 3.8. This will tell you the volume measured in gallons.
