  2. Goals of Progressivism • In many ways, they pick up where the _____________________________ left off • Remember the unfulfilled Populist goals? • We’d consider both groups liberals

  3. Goals of Progressivism • 1. Protecting Social Welfare: improving the lives of the less fortunate • Reformers like Florence Kelley & labor unions tried to improve working conditions • Groups like the YMCA, Salvation Army, and American Legion (1919) tried to meet people’s basic needs

  4. Goals of Progressivism • 2. Promoting moral development: the big push is against alcohol • Groups like the WCTU highlighted “Christian” reasons for avoiding drinking. • BTW, ‘temperance’ essentially means ‘the practice of controlling one’s actions’

  5. Goals of Progressivism • 3. Economic Reform: a strong push to limit one’s ability to become mega-rich. • Socialism/Communism exist on the extreme end of the “liberal” side of politics • Panic of 1893 makes people see some of the faults in “pure” capitalism.

  7. Goals of Progressivism • 4. Fostering Efficiency: make the most amount of stuff with the least amount of resources • Workers working as quickly as possible. • Makes prices of goods cheaper, which means we can own more things

  8. Goals of Progressivism • Louis Brandeis’s argument for shorter hours could be connected to Frederick Law Olmsted how? • People need rest; better to have 8 well-rested hours of work than 12 tired ones

  9. Local and State Govt. • Takin’ down the “Bosses!” • Wanted cities run by experts (“technocrats”) rather than just anybody • Just like the ________________________ at the federal level…

  10. Local and State Govt. • Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette was the classic reform-governor, attacking the railroads • The state-level was where Progressives were successful in getting child-labor laws passed.

  11. Local and State Govt. • Muller v. Oregon:Supreme Court decision that female (and later male) workers needed the govt.’s protection from harsh working conditions
