  1. Human Geography of Latin America

  2. Bellwork • Think: What would it be like to live in a city that had 30,000 in one square mile? (lots and lots of people living in one small area; very crowded) • Write: How would it be different/hard to… • Drive to the store? • Walk down to Maverick? • Get a job? • Breathe? What would pollution be like?

  3. Origins of the People • Indigenous peoples (peoples descended from the earliest inhabitants): • Travelled down from Asia and through Canada long ago (around 50,000 years ago) • The more recent ancestors were the Native tribes like the Maya, Inca, Aztec, and Olmec • When Europeans came, they mixed their cultures and traditions (and the traditions of the slaves they brought) and made a new ethnic group, called “mestizo” (mixed Native American and European descent)

Diffusion of Culture! • European conquerors and settlers brought: • Language (Spanish mostly, but also Portuguese and French to some areas) • Religion (Christianity, especially Catholicism, is very prevalent in this region) • Food choices • Musical and dance styles • As more and more Latin Americans immigrate to America, these things become more prevalent (show up more) in America

  5. Cities • Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and other countries are home to large, crowded cities (Mexico City has 30,000 people per square mile!) • Problems in these cities include: • Crime • Traffic • Drugs • Finding jobs (employment) • Pollution • Poverty

  6. Rural Areas • Much of the population in Latin America lives in rural (or country-side) areas • Depending on the area, this could be a mountainous area, near a rainforest, in a dry, desert area, or in a plains village (a lot of diversity here!) • Extended families tend to live close together, especially in rural areas, where life tends to be more traditional

  7. Music, Dance, and Sports • Baseball is hugely popular in the Caribbean • Soccer (football) is popular throughout Latin America • Dance forms such as the tango, salsa merengue, and rumba originated in this region • Latin music is lively and often includes stringed instruments (like guitars) and brass instruments (like trumpets) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvli6PmaRTQ&feature=related
