The Hunted Hunter: From Persecutor to Proclaimer

This passage from Acts 9:1-18 and 26:9-11 highlights the transformation of Saul, a notorious persecutor of Christians, into the apostle Paul. Despite his past actions, Saul is captured by Christ's grace and becomes a powerful witness for Jesus. This passage also emphasizes God's role as the initiator of our salvation, His ability to reach even the most hardened sinners, and the transformative power of His love. The implications and applications of this passage include the truth that no one is beyond God's grace, the need for personal confession of Jesus as Lord, and the responsibility to share God's grace with others.

  1. The Hunted Hunter Acts 9:1-18April 7, 2019

  2. Hunting the Hunter

  3. Acts 26:9–11 (ESV) I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

  4. Captured by Christ

  5. Ephesians 1:3–6 (ESV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons [and daughters] through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

  7. Joining the Hunt

  8. Implications & Applications: • No sinner is beyond the reach of God’s grace. • God is the initiator of our salvation. John 6:37 (ESV) All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out. c.f. John 6:44; 10:27–29; 17:2, 6, 9, 11, 24; 2 Cor. 4:6; Phil. 1:29; James 1:18.

  9. Implications & Applications: • The Lord brings conviction of sin and the need of salvation in Christ and the realization that He is Lord. Romans 10:9–10 (ESV) because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

  10. Implications & Applications: • The Lord saves us and then empowers us to advertise His grace to others. • Spiritual usefulness and honor go hand in hand with suffering.
