Clinical Psychology The main reference for all psychologist ad psychiatrists is the fourth edition of the DIAGNOSTIC STATISTICAL MANUAL (or DSM-IV) Clinical Evaluations and Diagnosis are organized by what is commonly referred to as the MULTI-AXIAL ASSESSMENT This System is set up in FIVE simple areas known as the Five Axis in order to efficiently Identify & Record diagnosis.

  3. Axis I: Clinical Disorders and Other Clinical Conditions of Interest • In this Axis, the Clinical disorder is Identified. • A series of coded numbers and letters (called V codes) will accompany the disorder in question that you need not be concerned with. It is simply an identification code for Psychologists • This is the area that is of most interest to you

Axis II: Personality Disorders & Mental retardation • There are 10 disorders that are not classified as clinical • It is not necessary for you to understand the difference between Axis I & Axis II disorders… Just be aware that there is a division. • Axis III: General Medical Conditions • These are conditions that can be identified by a Medical Physician Only and Only as they apply to the psychiatric condition • Most of the Time, you will see “V71.09 No Diagnosis on Axis III”

  5. Axis IV: Psychological & Environmental Problems • This Axis will identify to you what the Affected Areas of this persons life, what area of their life is causing the condition or both. Problems with Primary Support Groups: e.g. Death of a family member; Health problems in the family; Divorce/Separation; Neglect; Abuse; Sibling Issues Problems Related to Social Environment: Death or Loss of Friend; Inadequate Support Group; Living Alone; Discrimination; Life Cycle Changes; etc. Education Problems: Illiteracy; Discord with Teachers/classmates; Academia; etc. Occupational Problems: Unemployment or threat of job loss; Discord with Boss/Coworkers; Job Change; Difficult Work Schedule/Conditions; Housing Issues: Homelessness; Discord with Landlord/Neighbors; Unsafe Neighborhood; Inadequate Housing; etc.

  6. Axis IV: Psychological & Environmental Problems • This Axis will identify to you what the Affected Areas of this persons life, what area of their life is causing the condition or both. Economic Issues: Extreme Poverty; Inadequate Finances; Insufficient Wellfare Support Problems with Access to Health Care Services: Inadequate Healthcare; Transportation Issues to facilities; etc. Problems related to Legal Interactions: Probation/Parole; Incarceration; Litigation; Crime Victim NOS: War; exposure to Disasters; Discord with caregivers, physician, Couselors, social workers, etc.

  7. Axis V: GAF (Global Assessment of Functioning) • Relatively Identifies the Severity for the condition • Given on a scale of 1-100 in increments of 10 • 91-100- Superior Functioning (Perfect World: Never Happens) • 81-90- Normal • 71-80- Nothing to be extremely concerned about • 61-70- Having Some Difficulties • 51-60- Moderate Difficulties • 41-50- Serious Symptoms • 31-40- Losing Touch with Reality • 21-30- Delusions and Hallucinations Present • 11-20- Some Danger of hurting themselves or Others • 1-10- Serious Danger of Harm to Self or Others

On the Computer, Review through these Disorders and take notes to increase your own understanding: • Adjustment Disorders • Anxiety Disorders • Mood Disorders • ADD/ADHD • Delirium, Dementia & Amnesia • Dissociative Disorders • Schizophrenia • Paraphilias, Sexual & Gender Identity Disorders • Substance Induced
