Prefixes and Suffixes. ESL 201/202 Week #2. Root. The basic form of a word. You can add both prefixes and suffixes to the root. What is a prefix. A group of letters that is added to the beginning of a word to make another word. The prefix changes the meaning of the word (the definition ).

  6. What is a suffix? • A group of letters that is added to the end of the word to make another word. • Tells you the function of the word in the sentence. • Noun? Verb? Adjective? Adverb?

  7. -ance (-ence) • The act of doing something; the state of being something • Confidence • Hesitance

  8. -ion, -tion, -ation • The act of doing something; the state or result of doing something • Revision • Examination

  9. -er, -or, -ian • Someone who does something • Teacher • Sailor • Politician

  10. -ism • A belief or a set of ideas; the act of doing something • Buddhism • Criticism

  11. -ist • A certain with a particular set of beliefs or with a knowledge of an area of study • Cyclist • Pianist

  12. -ment • The act or result of doing something • Argument • Development

  13. -ness • The state of being something • Sadness • Softness

  14. -ship • The state of being something • Friendship • Partnership

  15. -ity • The state of being something • Popularity • Similarity
