Principle of Universality • Regional universality: material from and about all countries and regions of the world, in the relevant languages for research purposes • Subject universality: publications from all subjects areas • Temporal universality: sources from all periods and times • Universality of media and form: material in all the important forms such as manuscripts, printed works, microfilms, electronic and online publications • Research library and cultural archive for future generations Matthias Kaun | The Berlin State Library | East Asia Department

The East Asia Department - Berlin State Library = German National Resource for East Asia • Special Subject Collection East and Southeast Asia (Sondersammelgebiet) supported by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) • „Blauer Leihverkehr“ (inter-library loan service for German and European libraries) • East and Southeast Asia Virtual Library – CrossAsia (http://crossasia.org – platform to organise controlled access to e-resources) Matthias Kaun | The Berlin State Library | East Asia Department

East Asia Collection • collection building policy covers all areas of interest • all countries of this region are included: PR China (with Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Hong Kong and Macao), Taiwan, Mongolia, Japan, and North and South Korea • humanities and social sciences • rare ancient material from China and Japan such as manuscripts and woodblock prints • Access through own Unicode-databases and special inter-library loan service • Databases for German registered users in conjunction with the policy of German Research Foundation Matthias Kaun | The Berlin State Library | East Asia Department

CrossAsia Campus – Virtual Research Environment • Integration of classic services into the virtual platform(like ILL-services) • Access to content (also to content which subject to license and access to own and other digitised collections) • Communication (Central Space Area and communication between researchers, and research groups, set up of the CrossAsia Forum) • Information Management (Technical backbone and infrastructure incl.
