Your mission is to seek out and understand nature's wild forces. Should you choose to accept the challenge, your goal is to inform other natural disaster thrill seekers of the natural phenomenon of volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Using your informational writing skills, you will create a brochure that details the following key questions: • How and why does the event occur? • What are key locations in the world where the disasters are prevalent and why? • What important safety measures can one follow if they re ever in nature's fury? • Looking back in time, what are major disasters and what can we learn from them to help us in the future?

Using your highly defined writing skills, your brochure will contain information • how and why natural events occur • locate key hotspots in our geography for events • discuss key safety measures to take if caught in a precarious situation • report major historical natural disasters to see how we can learn from the past • To design and create your informational brochure, you will use a template from Microsoft Word. • Be safe and careful, but go forth and do not delay!

Remember to include titles, captions, headings and illustrations as a part of the informational writing. • Please refer to the additional resources section of the quest for interactive webbing tools, essay maps, informational on paragraph writing, and other graphic organizer such as the hamburger form to aid you in the writing process. • Have two other members of your class edit your portion of the brochure using the checklist printed from below. Click on the icon on the bottom of screen • Meet with the teacher as a final review before completing the final product. • Use Microsoft Word and the brochure templates available to create your final product. Each student may work individually and then cut and paste to put the final product together.

You have successfully become experts on your natural disasters, and your valuable informational brochures will benefit many thrill seekers in the future! • To continue your learning and interest in the area of Nature’s Fury, you have several options to chose to explore… • Connect the information you researched to your own life experiences. Write a narrative story showing what you learned in your own experiences. • Wild about weather or natural events, choose a new event to research. Create a poster to display the interesting facts you found. • Think about weather or natural events in our own area, make a plan of action for our school using research you gather.

Students at this point are familiar with how to write informational paragraphs. However, resources are included with the WebQuest if needed.) • As a team, select the natural force you want to research. We have read stories about each in our Nature’s Fury literature unit. You may select from tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, or earthquakes. • You will use the Nature’s Fury WebQuest to research and design an informational brochure about the natural event.

You also want to include maps, pictures, diagrams as needed. You may save them to your document folder. Make sure to credit the source. • As a team, write a rough draft your portion of the brochure. Remember to include titles, captions, headings and illustrations as a part of the informational writing. • Please refer to the additional resources section of the quest for interactive webbing tools, essay maps, informational on paragraph writing, and other graphic organizer such as the hamburger form to aid you in the writing process. • Have two other members of your class edit your portion of the brochure using the checklist printed from below.

There are templates available for brochure making. Your may individually type and design your columns and then cut and paste into the final product. • Print and display multiple copies of the brochure for the rest of the groups to review and provide feedback to as well. • Complete a “Carousel Feedback” of all the other groups in the classroom. Please give 2 to 3 positive pieces of information to each group on the poster next to the brochures.
