Course Overview IT is at the heart of everyday life, at work, home and in our leisure time: from computer graphics and control systems, to communications and problem solving, IT has an ever-increasing role to play. The Cambridge Technicals in IT draw this together through a wide range of units such as installing hardware, creating a website, identifying an IT fault, computer animation and e-commerce. It's an ideal foundation for students entering the workplace, The Cambridge Technicals in IT provide students with a theoretical background reinforced with practical skills that transfer into the modern workplace.

  4. The Course • OCR Cambridge Technicals Level 2 Extended Certificate in IT (QAN: 600/4225/4) • Worth 2 GCSEs (ish) • 1 year of study • 5 hours of guided study per week + 5 hours own study time • Graded Pass, Merit, Dist, Dist* (C, B, A, A*) • 2 x teachers • This course runs Monday p3/4/5, Wednesday p3 and Friday p5

Mandatory Units1 • All students will cover 2 mandatory, 30 guided learning hour units, • These will be taught in the two 1 hour lessons over the whole year. • Unit 01: Communicating in the IT industry (K/601/3192) Communication is a vital skill for any individual. The effective use of communication and flexibility of styles within the workplace is essential to maintain good working practice. This unit identifies the different IT tools available for safe and secure communication and exchange of information within an organisation. You will consider approaches and adapt the way they communicate, depending on their audience. This unit will prepare you to effectively use various communication channels, within a working environment.

  6. Mandatory Units2 • Unit 02: Working in the IT industry(J/601/3202) The IT industry is evolving and changing by the year as new technologies are discovered. This unit will allow you to investigate the types of job roles available in the IT industry and what the industry are looking for in a prospective employee. This unit will prepare you with the knowledge of your realistic career prospects. You will have a greater understanding of the qualifications required for a selected IT job role. The unit will allow the you to focus on what jobs are available and what characteristics you will need to secure that job. You will also be aware that jobs will be far afield and not in your local town.

  7. Optional Units • You will need to study a further 2 optional, 60 guided learning hour units from the list of those available. • Unit 03: Business IT skills (T/601/5012) • Unit 04: Installing computer hardware (T/601/3261) • Unit 05: Installing computer software (J/601/3264) • Unit 06: Setting up an IT network (M/601/3274) • Unit 07: IT support (F/601/3277) • Unit 08: IT fault diagnosis and remedy (K/601/3287) • Unit 09: Website development (A/601/3245) • Unit 10: Computer graphics (H/601/5801) • Unit 11: Multimedia design (L/601/3296) • Unit 12: Presenting information using IT (D/601/5828) • Unit 13: Interactive media production (Y/600/6514)

Optional Units • Unit 14: Computer systems (H/601/3255) • Unit 15: Supporting organisations with IT (A/601/3391) • Unit 16: Project planning using IT (A/601/3259) • Unit 17: Customising software (M/601/3405) • Unit 18: IT security (J/601/4057) • Unit 19: Mobile communications technology (H/601/3398) • Unit 20: Database systems (R/601/3400) • Unit 21: Doing business online (Y/601/5083) • Unit 22: Developing computer games (Y/601/3348) • Unit 23: Spreadsheet modelling (K/601/5816) • Unit 24: Animation techniques (M/600/6521) • These will be taught in the 3 hour lesson on a Monday. • One will be delivered between September and December, • The other will be taught between January and May.
