  2. Practice Quiz For each of the following sentences, write down if it is CORRECT or INCORRECT. 1. David was furious, so he punched a hole through the wall. 2. Sally was upset, she went to her room to be alone. 3. I wasn’t sure what to do but I had to do something. 4. She hesitated; what if she made the wrong choice? 5. The dog jumped at Elijah, he sunk his teeth into tender flesh, making the boy shriek. 6. It’s been ten days since I’ve eaten; and I think I’m starting to see food instead of people’s faces. 7. Because I’m scared of the dark, I leave the nightlight on every night.

Joining Sentences There are two main ways to join two different sentences (independent clauses). • FANBOYS = coordinating conjunctions • FOR • AND • NOR • BUT • OR • YET • SO Format: IC, FANBOYSIC. EX: I didn’t want to go to school. My mom made me go anyway. I didn’t want to go to school, but my mom made me go anyway.

The Semi-Colon ; Joins two related independent clauses (sentences.) • Note: sentences must be closely related • Note: each side of the semi-colon must be a complete sentence on its own Format: IC ; IC. EX: I didn’t want to go to school. My mom made me go anyway. I didn’t want to go to school; my mom made me go anyway.

  5. Common Errors 1. The Comma Splice: joining two sentences together using a comma EX: I didn’t want to go to school. My mom made me go anyway. I didn’t want to go to school, my mom made me go anyway. 2. Forgetting the comma before FANBOYS EX: I didn’t want to go to school. My mom made me go anyway. I didn’t want to go to school but my mom made me go anyway.

  6. Practice Write a sentence that uses each of the following words correctly and includes two independent clauses. Circle the FANBOYS word. • AND • BUT • OR • SO • YET

  7. Practice 6-8. Write three sentences that use a SEMI-COLON and include two independent clauses.
