If so, what? • What do you see as being an obstacle for you to accomplish your plan? • What do you think would help you overcome that obstacle?

  3. SD Graduation Requirements (These can be confusing, but we will work with you as you go through High school)

SD Graduation RequirementsCore classes • 4 units of Language Arts • Writing-1.5 units • Literature-1.5 units • Speech or Debate-.5 unit • Language Arts elective-.5 unit • 3 units of Math • Must take Algebra I-1 unit • Must take Algebra II and/or Geometry-1 unit each • 3 units of Lab Science • Biology-1unit • Any physical science-1 unit • Chemistry or Physics-1 unit • 3 units of Social Studies • US History-1 unit • US Government-.5 unit • World History-.5 unit • Geography-.5 unit

Graduation RequirementsContinued • 1 unit of any combination of: • Career & Technical Education • Capstone or Service Learning • Foreign Language • ½ unit of Fine Art* • Some districts allow ¼ credit for participation in extracurricular Fine Arts activities • ½ unit of Personal Finance or Economics • ½ unit of PE • ½ unit of Health or Health Integration • Note: School districts can require more than these for their students to graduate.

  8. Degrees “Undergraduate Degrees” “Graduate Degrees” Master’s Degree (MS,MA) 2-3 years after Bachelor’s. Classes very specific and harder than undergraduates. Doctorate’s Degree (Ph.D., DDM, DVM) At least 4 years after Bachelor’s degree. • Associate’s Degree (AA) 1-2 years. Classes are very specific for the program you are in. • Bachelor’s Degree (BS,BA) 4-5 years. Classes are broader. What people mean when they say they have a college degree.

What are Some Advantages of Having a Post-Secondary Degree? • Increase chance of getting a job. • Learn new things and skills • Grow as a person. • The relationships you make can help you later. • More opportunities will be available. • Sense of pride and accomplishment. • Make more $$$ • Rule of thumb “more education, the more money you will make” • But you do put more money into your education. • Differences

  11. Types of Post-Secondary Institutions Public Private Are not run by the state. Usually have a religious affiliation. Tend to cost more than public schools. Different standards More selective More scholarships Smaller campus pop. • Public schools are run and supported by the state. • Transfer credits easier. • Vary in size. • More of them. • Some provide more options for majors. • Less $ available-more competition for it

Types of Post-Secondary Institutions Technical “Trade” School College/University Take 4-5 years Take a wide range of classes More career options when graduate Might have to pursue a higher degree to obtain • 1-2 year programs • Classes are for the field • Have skill for the job • Less time in school • Some credits will transfer to another school.

  19. It depends on the Post-Secondary Institute! • So, look at the Admission Requirements of the Post-Secondary Institutes you are interested in your freshman or sophomore year of high school to help you choose classes.

SD’s 6 Public University/Colleges have similar Admission requirements • High school graduate • Average of a “C” or demonstrate competencies in areas where requirements not met And • Top 60% of class Or • ACT score of 18 or higher Or • 2.6 GPA [in 4 units of English , 3 units of math, 3 units of lab science, 3 unit of social studies, 1 unit of Fine Arts] • You can still get in if you do not meet these, but it is harder

Again, this Depends on the School • For the 6 Public University/Colleges, the cost of attending a year of college is approximately $14,000 a year. • This does not include extra spending money, clothes money, gas money, entertainment money, etc. • Technical school will be less. • Private schools will cost more.

  29. Free Application forFederal Student Aid • This is a form that you will fill out in your senior year to apply for financial aid from the governmentsuch as Pell Grants and Perkins Loans. • It will ask for your and your parent’s financial information.

  31. What is A scholarship? • Simply put: A scholarship is free money given based on a criteria. • The criteria can be whatever the donor wants it to be.
