The nine days represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga, each of them having a unique idea. They are, perhaps, representative of the values that make the world go around.

It would interesting to draw parallels of these nine forms to the world of investing Shailaputri– Daughter of the mountains:  Shailaputriwas the daughter of King Hemavana, who was the king of the Himalayas. She represents purity in its highest form and is also a symbol of devotion. The investment analogy we can draw from here is that one’s strategy should be based on clear thinking and as an investor, one must stay devoted and stick  to the strategy.

  4. Brahmacharini – The one who practices austerity:  The Brahmacharini form of Navdurga symbolizes the peace and bliss that comes from austerity. In terms of investing, austerity can be understood as a kind of discipline. An good investor must be disciplined with respect to stop losses, targets, and rulebooks.

  5. Chandraghanta – The harbinger of peace and prosperity:  This is the third manifestation of Goddess Durga, which shows the Goddess with 10 hands,representingthe ability to multitask among different roles and situations. To be a successful investor, you need to keep your calm and avoid panicking in challenging situations. Multitasking also refers to researching, executing, and risk management, all at once.

  6. Kushmanda – The one who brings light to the world:  Kushmandais revered as the creator of life or the one who brought light into the dark world. Just like Kushmanda, investors need to rationalize the most volatile of situations.The investor must employ his/her knowledge and understanding to eliminate doubt.

  7. Skandamata – The one who leads the war against evil:  This fifth form of Navdurga refers to the mother of Lord Skanda or Lord Kartikeya. She is revered for her leadership qualities which is why she was appointed by the Gods as the commander-in-chief of the army in the war against demons. In the investment world, one must take charge of one’s investments, too. Even though markets will remain uncertain, the investor must take the initiative and responsibility by thinking on one’s feet.

  8. Katyayani – The emitter of divine light:  The Katayani form is fearsome yet benevolent. It is said that nothing can be  hidden from her. In fact, her vision is so powerful that nothing misses her eye. Just like the Goddess, investors also need to have an eye for detail. Always stay updated with developments which may affect your investments.

  9. Kalaratri – The fearsome form:  Kalaratriis worshipped as a benefactor and also feared as a protector. Kalaratri is known to be benevolent when good is done and destructive in the face of evil. This form of Goddess Durga also represents the ability to make quick decisions. An investor, like the Kalaratri form, must take hard decisions in a short span of time. This is true when choosing the right stocks at the right time and also disposing off the wrong ones, even if it means taking a loss.

  10. Mahagauri – The luminous beauty:  Mahagauriis the most subtle and endearing forms of Goddess Durga. It is believed that worshipping Mahagauri liberates people from their sins. For an investor, this form represents the unlearning and relearning journey. It is okay to go wrong and make a mistake. However, one must learn from them.

  11. Siddhidatri – The giver of supernatural prowess:  This ninth form of Goddess Durga is known to bestow insights and perpetual wisdom in her worshippers.
