  1. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

  2. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces • How do you describe a force? • Strength • Measured in Newtons, N • Direction

  3. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces • If the sum of all the forces acting on an object are balanced, then the object’s motion will not change. • Net force = 0 N

  4. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces • If the sum of all forces acting on an object are unbalanced, then the object’s motion will change. • Net force > 0 N

  5. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces • Net force is the sum of all the forces acting on an object.

  6. 12.2 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces If the net force is unbalanced, how will the object’s motion change? • Velocity is speed with direction. • Acceleration is a change in velocity. • Acceleration is a change in speed, direction, or both. • Speeding up = positive acceleration • Slowing down (deceleration) = negative acceleration

  7. Balanced or Unbalanced? (Water’s) Upthrust Gravity

  8. Balanced or Unbalanced? Gravity Table’s Upthrust

  9. Balanced or Unbalanced? Air resistance is pushing upwards Gravity is pulling the man to the ground

  10. Balanced or Unbalanced? Air resistance is pushing upwards Gravity is pulling to the ground

  11. Balanced or Unbalanced? The magnetic force is pulling the paperclip upwards Gravity is pulling the paperclip to the ground

  12. Balanced or Unbalanced? Each team is exerting a force – what happens if the pulling force produced by each team is equal? What would happen if the team on the left were able to produce a bigger pulling force than the team on the right?

  13. Guided Practice • Net Force and Direction = ______________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 10 N to the right 10 N

  14. Guided Practice • Net Force and direction = ______________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 0 N, none 10 N 10 N

  15. Guided Practice • Net Force and direction = ___________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 5 N upward 5 N 10 N 10 N

  16. Guided Practice • Net Force and direction = ____________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 0 N, none 5 N 10 N 10 N 5 N

  17. Guided Practice • Net Force and direction = _____________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 15 N to the left 5 N 10 N

  18. Guided Practice • Net Force and Direction = ______________ • Balanced or Unbalanced? • Object’s motion will or will not change? 10 N to the right 10 N 20 N
